CHISEL PLOW BASICS

l  Our chisel plows are rated at 15 HP per shank, which is consistent with the industry. Application around 12 HP per shanks is typical.

l  Tillage depth of 8-10" is expected for conventional results. 12" depth is considered exceptional.

l  Claims of greater depth by a "Chisel Plow" are likely to capture your imagination. In theory, the entire shank could till 28" deep, but if soil was that soft, you don't even need to chisel plow it.

Model 4720 includes 7 shanks for 12" spacing across 6-ft working width. Plant to use a 70-100 HP tractor, depending on tillage depth and soil conditions. Includes three toolbars for residue clearance. 4x4 toolbar size. Use 5 shanks for even more penetration in harder soil, more residue clearance, narrower working width, use on 50+ HP tractor, etc. Hitch  bars and gauge wheels are adjustable to allow many shank positions. 6 shanks can be used. Category-2 hitch.
This is also available with a wider frame and more shanks. Spring-cushion shanks available but generally less needed on small-scale equipment.

CHISEL PLOW BASICS
l Chisel plows are intended to fracture and mix topsoil. Tillage depth is similar to plowing but chisel plows leave residue on top, require less Horsepower and leave a smoother finish.
l In contrast, "rippers" are heavier to fracture harder soil and usually can till a little deeper, but do not mix soil. "Sub-soilers" are heaviest to fracture soil below topsoil with no mixing soil.
l It is not unusual to first disk field to cut up residue. Chisel and disk again, if needed. "Disk chisels" do both jobs at once.
l In many common soils, allow time for soil to mellow between chisel plowing and finishing seedbed. Many operators chisel plow after harvest to prepare field for  next spring.
l Horsepower requirements vary, depending on soil type, moisture and tillage depth. Seek local practices and opinions. Feel free to ask for recommendations.
